Projects Manager

thru is under the direction of Helen Fernand. She undertook her first law degree at the Universities of Glasgow and Erasmus in Rotterdam, majoring in Constitutional Law and Human Rights. She then completed a Masters Degree in Public Law at the University of Stellenbosch.

She has taught human rights law at the University of Stellenbosch, worked at the Scottish Human Rights Centre and with London based charities such as Inter-Action and Justice Africa.

Jacqueline Duerr

Jacki is the Projects Assistant. She is a poiltical scientist and ethnologist, currently reading towards a Masters at the University of Zurich.

She is currently carrying out research on HIV and Governance but, with this being THRU, her research is looking at the topic from a fresh angle.

Deriane "Nicky" Renoster

Nicky is the Office Assistant. He also manages THRU's fund raising market stalls. He undertook on the job training in computers and office skills - which he loved.

Nicky wants to concentrate on learning design skills and more about computers.

Professor Costas Douzinas and Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller

Associate Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller

Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller is head of the Private Law Department of Vista University. She is also an Advocate of the High Court. She has published extensively on the voices of the marginalised, women's rights in South Africa and a feminism.


Associate Professor Karin van Marle

Professor Karin van Marle lectures in the Department of Legal History, Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy, of the Law Faculty of the University of Pretoria. She has also taught at the University of South Africa (UNISA). She has an extensive publications record and has delivered papers at international conferences. She is the leading proponent of an ethical approach to human rihgts in South Africa

Melissa Steyn

Professor Melissa Steyn is the Director of the Institute for Intercultural and Diversity studies, part of the Graduate School of Humanities of the University of Cape Town. She is the author of the award winning book "Being white isn't what it used to be!".

Ms Lynne Abrahams - Treasurer

Lynne Abrahams is a Senior Researcher with the National Council of Provinces. She previously held the post of Editor with the Parliamentary Monitoring Group, the organisation providing "Hansard" records of the Parliamentary Committee meetings. She has law degrees from the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

Collette Herzenberg - Secretary

Collette Herzenberg is a Senior Researcher with the Institute for Democracy South Africa (IDASA). She has also worked as the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Justice and Constitutional Development Secretary and was a Parliamentary journalist and presenter for DSTV. She has Political Science degrees from the Universities of London (School of Oriental and African Studies SOAS)) and Cape Town.

Professor of the Faculty of Political Science, Rutgers University, New Jersey. Interests cover Law, Gender and Political Science. She is currently focusing on the African value of Ubuntu and how it can inform Constitutional jurisprudence in South Africa.
